Boy oh boy. How time flies.
We end one season –fall 2007 and suddenly it’s spring
2008 and I really need to update our What’s New column!
So..here goes. Lori
Spielman Landscaping ended the year on a high note. We
had a busy season. We were busy right up through
December. Along with our residential and commercial
landscaping and irrigation work, we helped a group of
volunteers clean up and plant a courtyard at the Middle
School in our home town of Ellington. We also
re-landscaped a small yard belonging to a non-profit
organization in Rockville, CT.
The middle of July was so
hot and dry that Lori decided that everyone needed a bit
of a break . So the crew headed for Newport, RI for one
of their yearly field trips. A sail on the water was
refreshing and provided a bit of respite. A nice lunch
and leisurely stops made for a great day. We have a
great bunch of employees and they deserved some fun

In early fall Lori took a
trip out to California with Landscape Designer Kathy Heminway
to a Landscape and Equipment show

interesting to talk to others in the industry. We met a
soil scientist out in California who does a lot of work in Connecticut
and Massachusetts. Always looking for something different, we
ordered a new herbicide applicator which may be a great
tool for the homeowner. A long handle houses a reservoir
which feeds liquid onto a soft ball which is then rolled
over the weeds. It is light, and user friendly and
should reduce chemical usage while cutting down on spray
and drift. We’ll try it on sidewalks and patios to see
how it works.
On the way to visit one
of our distributors we passed acres and acres of field
grown tomatoes. We happened upon a palm nursery which
was fun to explore as well as a garden center decorated
with the most colorful farm equipment one has ever seen

Our stop at Aurora Lights, a low voltage light
manufacturer, was informative. We came away impressed by
the quality of the product as well as the styling of the

The upcoming season will
be an interesting one. Higher fuel prices will probably
keep many more of us at home this summer. Perhaps this
is a good thing. When the grass starts to green up and
the leaves are unfurling – take a new look at your
landscape and imagine the possibilities – beautiful
perennial gardens, a new foundation planting, maybe some
soft low voltage lighting and a trickling water feature
to enhance that outdoor living area that would make this
summer feel just right.
You have an idea….Lori
